ON VIEW AT THE ARCHIVE
England Hidalgo:
The Years of Nineteen Hundred and Thirty and Nineteen Hundred and Thirty One

Lithographic crayon on rice paper, dimensions variable, 2022

In 2022, among the final students to graduate before SFAI’s closure, England Hidalgo created a series of rubbings of architectural details at 800 Chestnut Street, including the central tiled fountain and key features of the Diego Rivera Gallery. Installed in the gallery—many upside down or oriented as horizontal reflections—the rubbings evoked a ghostly parallel world inhabiting the same space.

Now, with the campus closed, Hidalgo has installed the works at the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive, bringing traces of 800 Chestnut Street into a new home among the many other memories of SFAI preserved there.

EXHIBITION HOURS:
On view any time staff are at the archive, which is generally Monday-Friday, 9:00-5:00, but please email or call ahead to confirm, because our schedule can occasionally vary.
